    Awesome Phone, but....

    3 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

I bought this pre-paid phone to use on my regular T-Mobile account because it was cheaper and less hassle than going through T-Mobile for an upgrade. Sort of. I bought this phone on a Sunday and by Friday, the phone memory was full. I had an SD card in the phone, but the phone would not read it for some reason. I took it to the T-Mobile store and they told me that I would continuously have storage issues with this phone. I was really bummed because this phone seemed like it had a lot of great features to offer. I ended up returning this phone and going through the hassle of upgrading at T-Mobile. However, if you need a basic smartphone without a need for a lot of storage, this is a great phone. It is lightweight, smaller than a lot of smartphones, easy to use and has a lot of neat features. Bottom line, if you have T-Mobile as a service provider, check with them about upgrades before taking it upon yourself and investing in something that looks great, but doesn't fit your needs.

I helped my wife and my sister in law purchase this phone and both have been very happy with it.

I was very excited when this phone came out as it is the first lower end phone that is waterproof and drop resistant. For a low end phone the specs are pretty darn good and the phone performs as good if not better than my Galaxy S3. The only real negative to me is the picture quality is not as good as the samsungs, nor does it have the best face camera feature only found on the samsung phones. Other than that I think it is equivalent if not better, and a whole lot cheaper too! It is faster and more responsive than my G S3 too. It has 4G, but I don't think it has as many frequencies as higher end 4G phones have, so the S3 may have it beat here. The battery life is phenomenal. My wife usually charges it once ever 2-3 days, and the battery just lasts. I have been very impressed, as my Samsung S3 has to be charged 3 times the amount hers does, even when the usages are similar.

I read on a review for another kyocera phone that turning off the continuous refocusing improves the phone quality and it worked. Before I did this it would snap a decent picture and then save a blurry one...very annoying. But after changing this setting the frustrations went away and I would say it is a respectable camera. Since we fixed this I would say the camera quality is now acceptable and appropriate for the cost of the phone.

I am really glad that Walmart started carrying lower end water resistant phones for Tmobile as it seems Tmobile was stubbornly refusing to do this despite other carriers doing it. I really hope that water resistance/proof and drop resistance starts being a standard on cell phones as all too many go to the landfill because of them not being able to hold up to water.

And no we have not tried dunking ours, we are glad to know that it is there if it accidentally falls into water, or our 1 year old pulls it off the table and decides to suck the life out of it (literally). Sadly both of these events is what caused the demise of some of our other phones and why we want more durable phones in my family! The rice bag trick works...but not indefinitely!

This phone rocks! I am typing this review on this phone! I bought this phone before the price drop! But nonetheless it meets or exceeds my personal expectations! Fast web, tons of android apps, love the haptic feedback when typing! Ordered online and took about a week and a half to arrive. I do not know what other phone has all these features for $100! Buy it, you would not be disappointed...

    Buyer Beware, Hydro Life Disappoints!

    1 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

We were very excited when the Kyocera Hydro Life was added to T-mobile's mobile phone lineup. The phone has numerous cool and useful features and is a competitive smart phone for the price. The main draw backs are the slightly outdated operating system, terrible battery life and the inadequate internal memory (8GB of ROM). The phone's features are numerous and it looks like it will be a fantastic phone for the price....on paper. When we received the phones we quickly encounters its numerous flaws and shortcomings; I bought one for myself and one for my teenage son. Within 2 weeks we had to return my phone and exchange it for another because it just stopped working. Over the next two months both of our phones began having serious problems. This phone is plagued with glitches that quickly make using it a nightmare. It drops calls, it restarts itself over and over...all day long, during use and while in rest mode, the outdated operating system hogs up most of the internal ROM and it has difficulty writing to an add on micro-SD card, it gets very hot while in use and quickly over heats and shuts down, missed calls and text messages often show up hours after they are sent, it isn't shatter resistant (one drop and the the beautiful display on my son's phone was totally shattered), etc, etc, etc.. Thank god for service plans which I highly endorse if you purchase this phone. The worst thing is this phone has awesome potential and nearly all its flaws could be corrected by simple software updates. There are scores of complaints about many of these issues on the web but none have been addressed by Kyocera. I wrote to Kyocera personally and never received a response. This phone has the potential to be great, especially for the price but until Kyocera commits to updating the system and fixing the numerous software glitches and defects this is not a phone I would recommend to anyone. The only good thing is that the service plan I purchased from Walmart has been great about the replacement of both phones. We received a free prepaid label for UPS and received our Walmart gift cards within 36 hours of dropping off the phone with our local UPS provider. I wanted to love this phone and did love it for a couple of weeks but the troubles start early and don't stop until the phone either dies or becomes impossible to use. Buyers Beware!

I bought this phone because it is rugged and supports wifi calling. However it drops about half of my calls; and text messages and voicemails don't show up for hours, and sometimes days. My wife is using the same service provider with a Samsung product with no problems. All of the bells and whistles are useless if the phone function doesn't work.

Unbelievable value for this smartphone. It has plenty of storage (contrary to another review), has fast processing speeds with the quad-core, and compares very well with higher end phones. I am a pre-paid t-mobile buyer so I have tried several other lower cost models and this one by far is exceeding my expectations. My only complaint is that the call quality is a bit muffled, but that is the trade-off for having a rugged water resistant phone.

This is my first Kyocera phone. I recently purchased one to replace my LG L70. Overall I am extremely pleased. I got mine from Metropcs for $50. It is very zippy for a budget phone, and runs all my apps no problems, no lag.

Display: The display is bright clear and crisp, excellent for a budget phone.

Camera: The camera is a hair better then your standard budget camera, especially in HDR mode. Pictures look great and no issues there.

Sound: Speakers work good, volume seems plenty loud, standard budget phone sound on speakerphone.

Onboard memory: Amazing for a budget phone with almost 4GB still available for user after factory apps are installed, plus your SD card.

RAM: 1.5GB over a standard 1GB found on most budget phones. Makes a noticable difference.

Processor: Quad Core is nice, it's a step up. Not high end phone fast, but definitely faster than a dual core.

Call quality: Standard for a budget phone. No better or worse then my LG. Reception seems on par with most phones in this group, no issues with dropped calls or missed messages.

Battery: Battery life is way better then most budget phones. Goes all day with medium to heavy use and still has some charge left.

Overall: Awesome phone for the price. Seems a step above most other phones in this price. The durable and waterproof design is a bonus as well.

I like the fact this phone is constructed to withstand things we encounter in daily life. It claims to be waterproof and able to withstand drops.

Taking the back off to install the SIM card, battery, and micro SD card revealed a gasket to seal the "electronics bay". Close up inspection of how the back attaches and the way the gasket seats lends to the credibility of it being waterproof.

The SIM card rests in a small removable tray beneath the micro SD card slot. It came out with a little resistance using my fingernail. I inserted the micro SD card (32 GB limit), and the battery. I plugged in the charger and set the phone aside. My trusty "P3 International Kill-A-Watt Electricity Usage Monitor P4400" (available from Walmart) showed the charger consuming 8.5 to 9 watts as it began to charge tapering down to 0 with the battery fully charged.

With the phone fully charged I went to the T-Mobile website and signed up for the $30 a month unlimited data / texts with 100 minutes talk time. My primary use for the phone is portable internet access.

Having activated the phone I launched Play Store and downloaded Netflix, MX Player, the Walmart App, and the AnTuTu benchmark app.

The processor is Qualcomm's MSM8212 quadcore clocked at 1190 MHZ. System RAM is 1.5 GB with 1.4089 GB available. The GPU is Adren0 305 driving a 960 x 540 display.

AnTuTu benchmark result is 15124 "Good job, welcome to the world of high-end smartphones".
    CPU: General, Supports most apps
    RAM: Good
    2D Graphics: General
3D Graphics: Good, Fluently support most games.

Currently running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with kernel3.4.0-gc40255c dated 17 July 2014.

Netflix works flawlessly with 4G and wifi. Surfing the web is fast.

Front camera is okay, back camera is about what you'd expect for this price point. Video recording is decent at 720P. Low light capability is grainy.

You can download the user manual from Kyocera's website prior to purchase. It is not included in the box.

I'm coming from the Samsung Galaxy world and will not hesitate to recommend this phone to everyone. The performance level belies the modest purchase price.

Kyocera is a long time manufacturer of electronics and has been known for quality builds. Way back in the days of audio cassettes I had a Kyocera recorder and it worked flawlessly day after day for years. My initial impression of this phone is it will do it's job now and well into the future. No more fear of thunderstorms producing downpours and drowning my phone!

    Great Phone so Far

    4 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

When I read the description of this phone I thought it was perfect for me and so far it has been! I had gone thru three phones in a matter of months and needed a phone that was waterproof and drop proof. I dropped two into water and another stopped working when I had my phone tucked into my waistband (as I do when I have no pockets) and I was sweating too much. So far I've dropped this phone a good six times and it still looks like new. I work with paint and need to access my phone with wet hands sometimes, so far the touch screen is still working perfect.

The call quality is excellent! I can easily hear the other person and they can hear me. My only two complaints about this phone in the month I've used it is that when I'm holding the phone against my cheek during a call the screen unlocks and I often press buttons and the end key with my cheek when I laugh. The screen also freezes occasionally when I'm holding the phone and a call comes thru. A message that reads, "To answer the call, please remove your hand or something covering the phone." I will remove my fingers or anything covering the phone and the screen freezes not allowing me to answer the call. This has only happened a few times, but is a little frustrating. Because of this I gave the phone a four star rating.

The Internet is easy to use and fast! Apps are easy to access.

Text messages go thru fast and I really like the swipe feature. I've had phones with the swipe feature and they don't always work well. This feature on the Kyocera Hydro works about 95% of the time which is awesome! The keyboard learns words frequently used as well. I usually text in different languages and swap language mid text and the phone keeps up with my sporadic vocabulary. The text messages are listed by contact in a thread. If you receive a group text, you will have to reply to the sender separately to have the unread message notification to disappear.

The battery life lasts all day. I use my phone mostly for texting (I text all day from the moment I wake up to bedtime) so I can go two days without charging my phone. I occasionally make calls that last for more than an hour in addition to the texting and the battery doesn't drain too much, when this happens I have to charge the Hydro after a day and a half. When I make calls, use apps, text, use the camera and use the internet for most of the day I do have to charge it nightly.

The camera isn't the best, but it works when you don't have anything else to use. The camera also has a flash which is helpful. The camera can switch and has a self-timer.

    Better Than I Expected

I wanted to buy my daughter a phone that wasn't too expensive, because in the past she has been very hard on the previous expensive phones I had purchased for her.
I must say this phone is very impressive. I currently own a Galaxy S II and I would not mind replacing my phone with the Kyocera Hydro. I really like this phone, and my daughter is enjoying it and is so happy I bought it for her.
The only drawback is the camera and the mega pixels. Pictures are not that great, but for what she uses the phone for it is prefect and the other features are great.
The best thing is I didn't have to spend $500-$700 for a great phone. I don't know about you, but I am not trying to spend $500-$700 for a cell phone for myself. ITS GREAT AND WE LIKE IT!

This is a great phone for people who just need a standard smart phone. It's not going to conquer the world, but it does what I need to. The processor is good, I haven't had problems with speed at all, but I probably don't use it as much as some would. It's had a few minor falls (Without a case), and is sill in great condition. I would recommend this as a great starter smartphone, or for a person that needs some thing durable.

Works as advertised. Runs with the Android OS so finding apps and games that work isn't a problem. Battery life seems a little short but what devices isn't. I'd go this route over signing a service contract or even shelling out $600 any day.

I wanted a water proof phone but, didnt find the xperia Z3 worth the 600.00 installment plan on Tmobile. The Z3 front camera was horrible and, it didnt feel comfortable in my hand. I dont like glass rear or backs on phones so, i decided to try the hydrolife. Good featured phone with decent customizability options. Not a lot of extra apps from the manufacture like Sony and samsung would have. However, as most low end androids the cameras are mediocre compared to the low end Nokia Lumia windowsphones. The battery life is bad on the device for a meddium- heavy user. The water proof is true and durability is excellent. The antenna and, voice quality are great. Although, its a good phone for someone not heavy into voice calls or internet, the LG optimus F60/F70 are better options. You will have to have the MetroPCS versions unlocked but, once you do; its a much better phone. The wifi calling works on the Tmobile network being that Metro is a MVNO of Tmobile but, network lock all their phones.

I was skeptical about buying such a cheap Android phone at first, but if you can get signal with T-Mobile, This phone is THE way to go. Very sturdy, (Supposedly) waterproof, although I'm not going to test it.

    Pros:
    Fits well for one-hand use
    Good resoultion screen
    Great battery life
    MicroSD card slot

    Cons:
Battery cover never fully snapped into place for me, but I got a case for it too, so I'm not too worried about it.

This phone replaced my LG G2. I thought it would be for a few paychecks until I save up for the LG G3. However after two weeks I can honestly say that this is the best deal ever! At this price range I have a fast, nice screen, water resistant phone that works smoothly. It is the best low end-mid range Android I ever used! I will save the extra $400 that I would have used on the LG G3 and buy myself some new clothes!

The phone can use wifi for internet and calls. With the $30 a month unlimited data / text, 100 minute talk time plan, wifi call minutes count against the 100 minute allotment. The phone holds signal with my FIOS wireless router about as far as any of my laptops will.

T-Mobile has two types of plans, a pre-paid plan where you pay for a month of service in advance, and a post-paid plan where you pay at the end of a month of service. The post-paid plan requires a credit check. This phone works on both plans.

    • ciscoa

I bought it in the store and I put my sim card in the phone. The phone asked me for a code. I have the Walmart Family Plan service through T-mobile. I called and talked to a family plan customer service rep. The rep told me some t-mobile phones need to be unlocked to work on the walmart family plan and to go back to the store and have the store staff unlock it. I went back to the store and they don't know how to unlock the phone. They were as surprised as I was, that it didn't just work because it was a t-mobile phone. So I returned it and have to decide on another phone.

    • Dwizzle86
