Love my new Microsoft Lumia 640!

Just got my new Microsoft Lumia 640 it on June 18th 2015 at Walmart in Carlsbad, CA and works great; especially for the incredible price of $99.76 USD plus tax!

Love the apps with the new phone and feels much more functional than the prior Nokia Lumia 521 I had. Its much faster with a quad core processor and the 5" HD screen is much more impressive and brilliant.

Thank you Walmart, T-Mobile and Microsoft for getting it done right! PS: it has an 8 MP camera and can support a 128GB SD card & is Windows 10 upgrade-able between July 29 2015 and July 29 2016 for free!

    Excellent Phone -- Fantastic Price

It's been slow coming, but the Lumia 640 is a great phone. I'm upgrading from a Lumia 521, which was less than $99 (now around $50). That 521 is a great low-end smartphone, but I was ready for an upgrade.
But the 640, despite it's low price, is anything but low-end. If the camera is really important to you, you might need to upgrade, but the 640 is more than adequate with an 8MP camera and flash. It has Glance and the latest Windows 8.1 Update 2 and Denim. Also has NFC and VPN setup. Also double-tap activation. Comes with 1GB memory, but that's plenty since you can add an SD card for all the storage you'll need. Has wireless calling and LTE.
Since I'm into the Windows PC ecosystem, it was great seeing the phone sync with all my calendars, contacts, and apps.
Of course at this price it is plastic, but with a protective case, who cares!
A friend was examining my 640 yesterday and wondering why her smartphone cost hundreds of dollars more. Me, too.

I have been waiting for this phone to come out and glad its finally here. The performance on windows is great. It doesn't have the same selection of apps but I love the feel of Windows and everything just works flawlessly.

    Excellent Value for Money

    5 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

Finally a decent phone from Microsoft/Nokia that is worth buying. With 1GB RAM, two cameras on either side, its an excellent value over Lumia 635 and Lumia 830.

Windows OS: is very efficient and hence 1 GB is sufficient for this phone. Unlike Android, the interface is consistent allowing us to switch handsets & manufacturers without having to re-learn the interface.
Offline maps (so GPS does not use data plan and works without cellphone signal) and Cortana are key highlights of the OS.

    Incredible value

If you aren't beholden to some crucial app that is only on Android or iOS, then you need to move to Windows phone and pick up this Lumia 640. To get performance like this you'll spend 2-3 times as much on an android phone (let alone iphone costs!) and the functionality of a well set-up start screen on windows phone with its live tiles/live folders is so far superior to the other two platforms. The camera on this model is not going to win awards, but it's good. Daylight pictures are actually surprisingly good. Has a front-facing camera which is good for skype and the forward-facing camera has a flash. Low-light pictures can get grainy but there's barely any lag in taking a picture, which is something you can't say for tons of flagship android devices.
Had this phone for 4 days now and couldn't be happier - especially given the price!

    Replaced our Samsung Galaxy S2

    5 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

Read a lot of reviews and checked a lot of prices, and decided on trying this Windows phone to replace our older Galaxy S2 Android that was getting really sluggish.
So far, the phone is working out great! It doesn't have all the Apps that were available on Android phones, but there are more Apps available than I expected.
I have a T-Mobile simple choice plan and was concerned that this phone might only be usable on the prepaid plans, but a customer rep at T-Mobile assured me I could use this on my existing plan (and it was $30 cheaper at WalMart than at T-Mobile). The phone comes with a micro SIM card with instructions on how to go to T-Mobile's website to activate the new SIM card (my old SIM card was not a micro and it's better to use the latest SIM cards anyway). Once I added the new SIM card after on-line activation, the phone was usable on my plan immediately. The downloads on LTE are much faster than on the 4G on my old Samsung, and the voice quality and signal strength are better at my home than on the older phone. I think I'm going to be happy with this phone!

I also have a Samsung Galaxy (Android) and iPhone 6, but this phone is my new best friend. I just left the interface. It also has all the favorite apps I use on the other platforms. This phone is so fresh. Beautiful! It's also fast and responsive.

This is my 3rd Windows phone and by far my favorite. Big, bright display, fast processor, replaceable battery and storage - all for $99. And the Windows OS just keeps getting better. What's not to like?

For the given price it has tons of features which were missing in earlier 521. Also I am enjoying LTE speed.

Very good phone who wants to start or switch to windows phone.

    Incredible value!

This is a really stellar phone—it's budget-priced, but easily competes with more expensive mid-range phones on other platforms. Performance is fast, the display is nice, and it comes with a lot of perks like Glance screen (shows you the time and notifications without having to wake up the phone), double-tap to wake and NFC. The rear camera is very good for its price range (front camera is just OK, but will work fine for video chat or the occasional selfie), and battery life is great—I can get two days out of a charge easily. I'm coming from a Lumia 635, and it's a significant upgrade in every way at a similar price, really a pleasure to use. If you have any interest in trying a Windows Phone, or want the best-value midrange/budget smartphone out there and are not already locked into iOS or Google services, this is quite possibly the phone for you.
NB: This model is locked to T-Mobile (so it has WiFi calling) and can be used with postpaid or prepaid plans. It supports all their LTE bands including Band 12, which means better coverage inside buildings for areas where TMo has rolled it out.

Upgrading from a Lumia 521, this phone is a dream to use. I had to get used to the larger 5.00" screen size, harder to hold in the hand than the 4.00" screen size I was used too. The battery life appears to be on par with my old Lumia 521, even with the bigger screen, HD, LTE, etc... This phone is VoLTE capable, and works quite well. Both front and rear cameras work well, but I wish it had a dedicated camera button, this is severely missed.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A (700 MHz) BAND 12 T-MOBILE PHONE, THIS IS IT. This future proofs this phone for years to come, and I can't wait for the expanded coverage to come to my area. This phone WILL work with both pre-paid and post-paid T-Mobile service.

Windows phone 8.1 has a lot going on at once compared to windows phone 8.0, and this takes some time to get used to. I am eagerly awaiting the free Windows phone 10 update, this will be a very welcome upgrade. Not only do you keep the same great features, it simplifies the menus and options to make the experience even more streamlined. Only unfortunate feature, this phone has a virtual back, windows, and search button on the bottom of the screen as opposed to it being imprinted on the phone like other Lumia's. It is harder to press without pressing other icons if you have large fingers. For sentimental sake, I liked the NOKIA branding better than Microsoft at the top of the phone, but I am nitpicking.

I think this is an AMAZING phone for the price, my old Lumia 521 cost $130 new, and at $99, the 640 is a steal.

I love my new Affordable and Nice Lumia

    5 out of 5, reviewed on 01.01.0001

This phone is really good. It may nott have the best camera of the best features on the market but I wanted a simple affordable phone that has the basic features (call, text, emails, webs surfing, camera, and gps). I'm not a big Apps fan.
This phone is a very good entry level phone. The camera has a very nice image quality (a bit less is you zoom in on far objects, but still reasonable). It's VERY light, the screen is very large, bright and sharp colors. The audio quality is also good, and the battery seems to last two days with a normal use.
If you look for a good low budget phone I recommend this one.

I had a Lumia 521 windows phone and it was a nice starter phone for a windows phone user. The 640 is waaaaayyyy better. Better camera, better resolution, bigger screen, more hi tec. You won't find a better phone for a $100. The windows system is different that IOS and Android, but after you get use to it it's really very easy to use. If you want a phone that does just about everything but doesn't come with the hefty price tag, this phone is it. Hey, when a better windows phone comes out you can feel free to upgrade because you've only got a $100 invested in it.

I just picked up this phone 6/27/15. This is by far the best phone you will get for $99. It's a steal. It's better than most phones you'll find at the $200 price point as well.

Huge 5" screen. Removable / replaceable battery, SD car slot for expandable memory. LTE. It gets great reception. It has all the apps I need ( Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Hulu, Netflix, etc...) and it works with my Unlimited T-Mobile data plan. I've always been a flag-ship phone person but this is close enough.

I've had this phone several weeks and have been very happy with it. Comes with a swype keyboard and cool emojis. Great camera and even an FM radio, but only works with earphones. Contacts transferred easily from my previous android phone, but I wasn't so lucky with my stored pictures.

I this prepaid only? or can this phone be use for regular post paid service with t-mobile?
    Asked on 06.19.2015

    • Marty

I just upgraded from the Lumina 521. All I had to do is remove the sim card with no modifications from my old phone, and put it into my new Lumina 640. I turned it on, followed easy instructions, it did a "phone restore" It automatically brought back everything.( t mobile account, contacts, photos, music, apps, etc) to my new phone. I didn't even have to contact T mobile. I am on a family post paid plan.

    • jojodept20

      YES

    • Radar1

The phone comes with a Micro SIM card for T-Mobile, with instructions on how to activate the new SIM card on your existing T-Mobile plan. I had the same question and checked with T-Mobile first and now am using it on my existing T-Mobile plan. Very easy to do once you log into your T-Mobile account.

    • brkr12002

you can use a post paid sim card from Tmobile and should not have any issues.

    • ghilliegirl

This can be used for regular service.

    Will this work on ATT?
    Asked on 06.21.2015

    • Jenni

This phone will only work with AT&T after it has been unlocked. T-Mobile will unlock your phone after you have paid them for service and used the phone on their network for a few months. Exactly how long depends on whether you are pre-paid or post-paid. See the T-Mobile site for their unlock policies. Once you've unlocked it, this phone will work on T-Mobile, AT&T, or Cricket, but not on Verizon or Sprint.

    • brkr12002

no, you would have to get the phone unlocked

    • turettesman

NO, this phone will not work with AT&T as it is locked to T-Mobile, putting an AT&T SIM will only result in an error message on the phone. . I believe that AT&T will be offering their own version of this phone very soon.

    • ryan

Yes, AT&T works on the same network as T-Mobile. In fact, my Friend Mike uses a AT&T IPhone 5S on my T-Mobile Family plan I have without issues. Just insert your T-mobile SIM card into any AT&T phone and you should be good to go!
